About Moonta Craft
Moonta Craft Incorporated is a non-profit, community-based organisation originally established in 2005 and incorporated in 2013.
The objective of the Moonta Craft Co-op is to provide its members with a retail shopfront that offers members the opportunity to sell their hand-crafted items in a prominent George Street retail outlet.
Not only can members earn a bit of extra income from selling their crafts, but the shop also provides a valuable retail testing ground for each member to develop and build their own individual micro-businesses across a variety of cottage industries.
The Moonta Craft Shop is staffed and operated entirely by a committed team of volunteers who keep the store open for business seven days a week.
How Is the Craft Shop Funded?
The Moonta Craft Co-op generates revenue to cover operating costs by charging a small commission on each sale made within the store. Members also pay an annual membership fee that gives them the opportunity to stock their items for sale within the shop.
Commissions from sales and membership fees pay for the store’s ongoing operating costs, including paying for rent, electricity, insurance, maintenance, and other sundry costs that help keep the shop running.
All revenue generated by the store is reinvested back into the organisation to fund ongoing shop operating costs and future growth opportunities.
The organisation was also recently (2019) awarded a community grant from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), which allowed the committee and members to afford some much needed shop updates and upgrades, including implementing an electronic payments system (EFTPOS card reader).
